About This City
Port Alberni was named for Captain Don Pedro de Alberni, a Spanish officer, who commanded Fort San Miguel at Nootka Sound on Vancouver Island's west coast from 1790 to 1792.
Port Alberni is an affordable waterfront community at the heart of the west coast of Vancouver Island. We are situated at the end of a 48 kilometre-long inlet and offer access to wilderness so amazing, you can only realize it when you're here.
Our surroundings are incredible; surging rivers filled with salmon and trout compete for attention with a rain forest of giant trees towering more than 61 m (200 ft) into the heavens. We invite you to view our wonderfully restored past and take the time to witness our proud heritage evident through out our city. The City of Port Alberni offers a deep sea port, beautiful waterfront quays, an airport, a new hospital, shopping mall, gaming centre, and a well-developed array of recreational facilities and a vast supporting infrastructure often found in much larger cities.
Port Alberni and the pastoral Alberni Valley, have become gateways to the West Coast of Vancouver Island. With the increased popularity of Pacific Rim National Park, Barkley and Clayoquot Sounds, and the incredible sport-fishing available, more and more visitors are spending their vacations in Port Alberni allowing multiple day trips to a wide variety and of West Coast locations.
Port Alberni is also home of the world famous Martin Mars Flying Tankers, these flying "boats" perform incredible fire fighting duties, with the ability to drop over 27,276 litres/7200 gallons of water!
